Hislops Café commenced in December 1995 as an outcome of Paul & Elizabeth Hislop together with Paul’s parents, Ivan & Ella, having housed and fed workers from all areas of the world as they stayed at the Hislop homestead and helped on the organic farm. This interaction and the WWOOFers (willing workers on organic farms) appreciation of the bread produced with grain ground by the flour milled on the family property, the meals they shared and philosophy of Hislops, helped the decision to provide a finished product to the tourists and New Zealanders who travelled to and through Kaikoura.
Together with Paul’s brother Graeme, alterations commenced on the property that now houses Hislops Café thereby bringing the vision to a reality.
In 2007, further renovations and refurbishments are being completed as Paul and Elizabeth continue their path towards a sustainable “Taste Of The Future”, providing predominantly organic food and beverages where possible. Most importantly is building the culture of a helpful and supportive team at Hislops, without which, this progress could not be sustained and is always on the look out for those that can benefit from this win –win environment.
Hislops Cafes’ welcoming hospitality team encourage you, as a guest to take a menu, view the cakes, slices and specials on display, locate a suitable seat and table where, when you are ready, they will come to take your orders thereby giving the chance to relaxed in the ambiance at Hislops and enjoy the friends and company you bring. This practice of personalizing consistent care for every guest at your table both during the day and night service is also designed to enhance the taste of delight in the experience and give you every reason to return on future occasions.
Genuine stoneground wholemeal bread is baked daily and a variety of gluten free items are available, along with vegan options and organic meat items.
The day begins with breakfast options along with the daytime Café menu.
Luscious cakes and fresh baked muffins are available during the day to have with your favourite choice of tea or coffee.
Specials are designed to highlight organic seasonal produce with organic wine, beer and other beverage options progressing through to the evening where the menu changes from the daytime Café to an a la carte menu with substantial meat, and vegetarian and vegan options and desserts to further stimulate your taste buds.
